The Municipal Council of Quelimane distinguished, last Friday, the musician and poet Stewart Sukuma, with the Statute of Honorary Citizen of the City of Quelimane. According to a press release, the act led by the mayor of Quelimane, Manuel de Araújo, recognizes the role of Stewart Sukuma in the promotion, appreciation and preservation of the history and culture of the city of Quelimane and the “quelimanenses”. Therefore, the distinction made to Sukuma intends to honor the path of an artist who spent a significant part of his adolescence in the city of Quelimane. It was at that point in Mozambique that Stewart Sukuma defined himself as a citizen and artist, influenced and inspired by the tradition and identity of the Zambezi people and, above all, by the energy of the city of Quelimane. For Manuel de Araújo, Stewart Sukuma never left Quelimane and this connection is reflected in his music or in his poetry eternalized in the book O tailor e a arte de sedar o amor, recently released in Portugal and Mozambique. Manuel de Araújo adds that the musician and activist is not just an artistic reference, but an active citizen and always engaged in building a better country. In his speech, Stewart Sukuma thanked the gesture and said that “the places, people and smells that I discovered until I was 14, are still alive and with a lot of meaning. This recognition renews and elevates the love I have always felt for the land.” The Municipal Council of Quelimane also awarded a Certificate of Recognition to the musician Stewart Sukuma, for his 40-year career. On the same occasion, the presentation of the book The tailor and the art of sewing love took place. The book was presented by Jorge Ferrão, rector of the Pedagogical University of Maputo.
