The Raxio Group has started building the first independent data storage centre in Mozambique, budgeted at 20 million US dollars and is expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of next year.
For this purpose, the governor of the Maputo province Júlio Parruque laid the first stone this Thursday, in Beluluane Industrial Park (MozParks), southern Mozambican province of Maputo.
Speaking during the ceremony, Parruque pointed out the importance of investments of that magnitude in Maputo province, as the data centre brings an added value in terms of cyber security in Maputo and in the country.
He said that MozParks in Beluluane is a clear example of the provincial government’s vision to attract new investments as a way of ensuring economic and social development, by creating more job opportunities for young people.
“We have land as a valuable resource and we don’t want lots of bureaucracy for it to be granted to investors. This initiative will speed up development in the province and we want it to be cherished by all. We hope the project will help the country leapfrog when it comes to cyber security,” said the Governor.
For his part, Raxio Group CEO Robert Mullins highlighted the role Raxio Mozambique will play in strengthening the country’s digital backbone by providing a secure storage environment.
“We are pleased to inaugurate yet another facility, which demonstrates Raxio’s commitment to serving the region’s economy. Every day more and more Mozambicans are joining the internet and the number will continue to increase. That is why access to a reliable environment of this nature in Mozambique is more important now than ever”, he said.
He pointed out the rapid increase of internet usage in Mozambique is witnessed by the number of users which doubled from 15 per cent in 2015 to reach 32 per cent in 2021, indicating that soon, the country will undergo a significant digital transformation.
According to Mullins, the company is on track to complete several investments in data centres across Africa to meet the growing demand for international standard data centre infrastructures in the region.
The new data centre will support the country’s digital growth by providing a reliable storage environment that will be operated by a team of skilled young Mozambicans.
In addition to storage capacity, the initiative will provide carrier-neutral facilities allowing customers to interconnect and choose from a diverse range of carriers and colocation providers, delivering the ultimate flexibility and most comprehensive services and reducing costs across the country.
Raxio also pledged to facilitate internet traffic amongst content providers locally and internationally and make the internet experience faster, more resilient, and more affordable for all digital users.
