Electricity production expected to drop 12% this year

The production of electricity in the country will reduce by 12% this year, compared to 2022, in which forecasts indicated a drop of 1%. The Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE) 2023 maintains that the drop is influenced by the possible reduction in the production of the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric (HCB).
The Report of the Ministry of Economy and Finance on the Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE) for this year, approved in December 2022 by Parliament, predicts casualties for the energy sector.
The document reveals that the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Power Plant (HCB) could register a reduction in production and, consequently, negatively influence the situation of production and export of electricity in the country, if compared with the previous financial year.
The numbers are expected to drop from 18,493,634 megawatts (MWh) in 2022 to 16,326,789 megawatts (MWh) this year.
“In 2023, the production of electricity will register a decrease of 12% compared to the forecasts for 2022, influenced by the forecast downward production of the Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), which will have a weight of 77% in the production structure and export”, says the document.
What's more, in addition to the reduction in production, which is around 17% internally, the Mozambican company considers a decrease in energy sales for a period of two months, due to internal restructuring.
“HCB foresees a reduction in the production and sale of energy in the months of April and May, due to the need to intervene in the refund channel, which is shared by generator sets 1, 2 and 3, a fundamental activity to guarantee the operation of these generator sets. safely, in addition to being part of the ReadSul II project, which aims to rehabilitate and modernize equipment to maximize installed capacity.”
Meanwhile, he foresees an increase in the hydro plants of the public company for the production, transmission, distribution and commercialization of electricity in the country, Electricidade Moçambique (EDM), when compared to the forecasts for 2022.
With this production, EDM expects to increase exports of electricity to the countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), due to the energy crisis that tends to devastate more and more countries in the region, and which, currently, represent 22% of the annual revenues of the Mozambican state company.
The PESOE forecast pointed to a decrease of 1% in the production of electricity and 13% in exports of the resource, in relation to the projections for 2021, respectively due to the decrease in the energy produced at HCB, which had a weight of more than 80% in the structures of production and exports.
The report forecast a 57% increase in production from the Majua mini-hydro plant, the same measure that was in the process of being expanded for consumers in the four towns covered by the mini-hydro plant. On the other hand, there was an evolution in the production of the Sembeziana mini-hydro plant, as the amount it produced was at the same level of consumption.
Electricity generation from thermal power plants showed a percentage increase of 3%, representing the highest performance of the diesel power plant, followed by Maputo gas thermal power plant with 101% and 8% respectively, with the lowest percentage degree in the generation of electricity from natural gas.
For the 2022 financial year, a growth in energy generation from solar sources of 135% was expected due to the evolution of global performance in relation to the projection for the year 2021.
It should be remembered that only 39% of the Mozambican population has access to electricity, corresponding to just 12 million Mozambicans. In other words, there is still a lot of work to be done. The data were provided by the chairman of the Board of Directors of Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM PCA), Marcelino Gildo Alberto, during the launch ceremony of the 45th anniversary festivities of EDM.
