Belgium will disburse 25 million euros (equivalent to 1.5 billion Meticais) over the next five years, for the development of renewable energies and waste management in the country, through a new cooperation program. The information was provided by the Belgian Development minister, Frank Vandenbroucke, on the occasion of COP 27, which is taking place in Egypt. “Our country (Belgium) will help Mozambique so that it can invest in green energy instead of fossil fuels”, said Frank Vandenbroucke, Minister of Development of Belgium. According to the Belgian leader, Mozambique is an example of low emissions, but is severely affected by climate change. Despite this, the country has the unrivaled resources to become a significant energy transition solution in southern Africa. Support for the period 2023–2028 is allocated taking into account that Mozambique is indicated as one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change and is, at the same time, one of the least developed in the world. Despite the riches of the subsoil, the initiative foresees studies for the production of green hydrogen in Mozambique, and the Belgian Development Agency will supply remote areas without connection to the electricity grid with solar panels. According to a statement cited by Lusa, the supply of drinking water and irrigation solutions based on solar energy is also being planned. Belgium will also support the implementation of a national program for sustainable waste management, which includes the construction of recycling facilities in Nacala and Nampula, with additional support from a multi-donor fund. Of the 25 million euros announced, part of the amount will be allocated to the loss and damage component to make public infrastructure more resilient to storms and floods. Belgium also announced an additional contribution of one million euros (62.9 million Meticais) for new drinking water installations in Mozambique. Source: Opais
