Reduces gas produced and exported by Mozambique

The country reduced natural gas production by about four million gigajoules in relation to the amount of natural resource that Mozambique produced in 2018. The data should be reversed by the start of the export of Liquefied Natural Gas by the floating platform in Cabo Delgado.
In 2021, Mozambique produced a total of 188 million gigajoules of natural gas, according to the National Directorate of Fuel Hydrocarbons, cited in a study by the National Institute of Statistics. Although the country is “famous” for holding huge deposits of the natural resource, recent years have been marked by a reduction in the amount of natural gas produced and sold. Between 2018 and 2021, there was a reduction of four million gigajoules of natural gas, that is, four years ago, we produced 192 million gigajoules and, in the previous year, the country produced 188 million.
Reduction is also the word that describes the amount of natural gas exported by the country. In the aforementioned period, the country registered a reduction of around nine million gigajoules of gas exported, that is, from 159 to 150 million gigajoules of gas.
Giga-joules is the unit traditionally used to measure mechanical energy (work), which is also used to measure thermal energy.
However, there has been an increase in the internal consumption of the resource that we have been talking about. Otherwise, between 2018 and 2021, the amount of gas sold in the national market rose from 23 million in 2018 to 29.3 million in 2021.
Natural gas is a non-renewable fossil fuel derived from the degradation of organic matter over thousands of years and under ideal conditions of pressure and temperature.
INTERNAL GASOLINE AND LPG SALES BOOST
Contrary to the trend of production and export of natural gas, products such as gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas had a significant increase in sales volume. According to the INE study, which we have been citing, the volume of gasoline sold in the national market increased from 394.6 thousand cubic meters in 2017 to 483.6 thousand cubic meters in 2021. This represents an increase of around 89 thousand meters cubic meters in the last four years, which corresponds to about 14%.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) was not far behind, having, in the period under review, experienced an increase in sales from around 30 thousand tons in 2017 to 46 thousand tons in 2021.
On the other hand, there was a drastic drop in sales of JET-A1 – one of the most used fuels in the aviation sector – from 75.2 thousand cubic meters in 2017 to 41.7 thousand cubic meters in 2021, a reduction of almost half of sales . The other fuel whose sales also dropped is lighting oil, whose sales dropped from 22,300 cubic meters in 2017 to 7,900 cubic meters in 2017.
In its assessment of the sector of natural and environmental resources and their uses, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) summarizes that “sales related to petroleum derivatives, in 2021, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) recorded an increase of 14.9 % and aviation fuel (JET-A1) – a drop of 9.3%”, says the institution, which, however, highlights “a significant increase in charcoal production in 2021 in the order of 159.3%, compared to to the year 2020”.
The indicators presented by INE are based on the collection and treatment of databases and administrative reports made available by the sectors, which, directly or indirectly, deal with matters related to the environment.
