The provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism in Nampula is highlighting improvements in the flow of domestic and foreign tourists following the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, which dictated the closure of several complexes and tourist sites in the province. Culture and Tourism Provincial Director Omar Aquiamungo said Nampula province, like others in the country, had suffered a lack of visitors, with had reduced revenues from the sector. But the province, he said, was seizing the opportunities generated by the relaxation of Covid prevention measures to get back on its feet. “We were practically blocked before, but now with the reopening, we consider that it is time to welcome guests back to the province,” Aquiamungo said, introducing a strategy of promoting tourism through a tourist welcome initiative organised by the department to capitalise on the frequency and flow of visitors. Aquiamungo foresees a still larger tourist flow. By August of this year, the province had reached 38% of previous visitor numbers. In addition, because the peak tourist period is approaching, parts of the province, such as Mossuril district, already have an advanced level of bookings, with just over 80% of accommodation booked. By December of this year, the province expects to receive about 270,000 tourists, and by August, the numbers stood at around 101,000. But Aquiamungo does not rule out the possibility of achieving his target, given the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions. Aquiamungo nevertheless finds it important to create packages promoting domestic tourism, and also to reflect on the capitalization of tourism. “Mozambicans are not able to pay high prices,” he observes, “but if tourism operators respond with a reduction in package prices and promote them in their establishments, we can turn tourists into return visitors, with concomitant gains for the province.” Source: Jornal Ikweli
